Qun Ti Zhong
Not a cultivar in the strict sense but a seed-grown mixed population — the genetically varied bushes that predate clonal selection. Qun Ti Zhong material is later, lower-yielding and inconsistent bush to bush, and is prized for exactly the complexity that inconsistency produces.
Where it sits in the botany
Qun Ti Zhong is recorded under Camellia sinensis var. sinensis, the variety group one level above cultivar. It is associated with China, which is where it was selected or is most widely planted rather than the only place it grows.

What the plant is like
Deep roots, late budding, variable leaf. In Longjing and in Wuyi it commands a premium over selected clones despite yielding less, because the mixture of plants gives a layered cup no single clone matches.
Why a grower plants it
Yield, hardiness, when it buds, what it resists and whether a machine can cut it. This is the half of a cultivar’s identity that decides what is actually in the ground, and it is usually left out of writing aimed at drinkers.
Everything a modern breeding programme selects against. Seed-grown plants carry a taproot rather than the shallow fibrous root of a cutting, so an established stand is markedly more drought-tolerant and longer-lived, but it is later, lower-yielding, uneven in bush size and uneven in shoot length — which makes machine harvesting impractical and hand picking slower per kilogram. Because the population is genetically varied rather than clonal, a pest or disease that takes one bush does not necessarily take its neighbour, which is the one agronomic argument that runs in its favour and the exact argument a monoculture cannot make.

Layered and slower to resolve than a clonal equivalent from the same ground: less immediate aroma, more depth in the middle, a longer finish, and a variability between batches that is itself part of the character. What a single clone gives in clarity a mixed population gives back in complexity.
How much of this is really the cultivar?
Qun Ti Zhong is the control experiment the rest of this catalogue lacks. It is the only entry where the cultivar variable is deliberately switched off — there is no single genotype to attribute anything to — and it still produces the most complex cup on the same ground under the same processing. That is a useful thing for a reader to hold onto: the depth people attribute to a famous cultivar name is often the depth of a mixed old stand. It is also why 'heirloom' and 'old bush' command premiums that the clone-versus-clone arguments never reach, and why those claims are close to unverifiable at the point of sale.
