Landrace populations and clonal monoculture

A field of one clone and a field of a seed-grown population are two different agricultural objects. The difference runs all the way through — when the field is picked, how the factory has to work, what the cup does, and what happens in a bad year.

Qun ti zhong in Chinese usage, zairai in Japanese, and simply old seedling tea in Indian usage: a stand grown from seed, in which every plant is genetically distinct. These are not wild populations. They are the descendants of generations of planting from locally collected seed, so they are adapted to their place and varied within it — which is what the term landrace means in any crop. Much of the material behind the most historically significant teas came from such populations, because until the middle of the twentieth century there was no alternative. The word landrace does real work here that heritage and traditional do not. It names a population that has been selected — by growers keeping seed from plants that did well, and by the site itself killing the ones that did not — over a long enough period to have become adapted to a specific place. That is a different thing from a wild population and a different thing again from a bred cultivar, and it is the middle term the tea vocabulary usually lacks.

Variability inside a single field

Stand in a seedling field and the plants beside each other differ visibly: leaf size, leaf colour, the angle the leaves are held at, how downy the young shoots are, when they break bud in spring. That last one is the practically important difference. A clonal field flushes as a unit, so a plucking round takes a uniform crop; a seedling field has plants at several stages at once, so any single round takes a mixture, and no amount of skill in picking eliminates it. Managers of such fields either accept mixed intake or pick selectively at higher cost. Selective picking is the route taken where the tea is valuable enough to justify it, and it is slow: a picker is choosing plants as well as shoots, and the yield per person-hour falls accordingly. It also requires pickers who know the field, which makes it dependent on a stable, experienced workforce in a way that harvesting a uniform clonal block is not. That dependency is one of the underrated reasons landrace production is concentrated where it is.

What the factory has to do about it

Mixed intake makes every processing step harder. Leaf of different thicknesses withers at different rates in the same trough; leaf of different toughness ruptures differently under the same roller; and a fixation drum set for one material will slightly under- or over-fix the rest. A maker working with a landrace population is therefore continuously compensating, and the results vary more batch to batch. This is the honest cost side of the ledger, and it is why the industrial answer to the question was clonal planting and why that answer was correct on its own terms. It also puts a limit on which categories can use the material well. A process with a narrow tolerance — a fine green tea, where fixation has to hit every leaf identically — suffers more from mixed intake than one with a wide tolerance, such as a dark tea that will be piled for weeks afterwards. Landrace material therefore reaches its best in the hands of makers working in small batches, which is another cost.

What the variability does to the cup

The argument for landrace material is that a cup made from twenty slightly different plants has more going on in it than one made from one plant repeated, and that the complexity is not reproducible by blending finished clonal teas, because the mixing happened in the leaf rather than in the chest. It is a real effect and it is not universally an advantage: some of the best-regarded teas in the world are single-clone, and a mixed field also mixes in its weaker plants. The fair statement is that the two produce different kinds of quality — layered and variable against defined and repeatable — and that markets exist for both. There is a testable version of the claim, and it is one of the few comparisons in tea that can be set up cleanly. Several Chinese producing areas make the same tea from qun ti zhong and from a named clone in the same season, with the same maker and the same equipment. Tasted side by side, the clonal version is typically the more consistent and the population version the more layered. That is about as close to a controlled comparison as the subject offers.

Risk, and the argument nobody made in 1960

The case for landrace material that has grown strongest is not about flavour. A genetically varied stand meets a new pest, a new pathogen or a shifted climate with a range of responses, and some plants do better than others; a clonal block meets it with one response. As pest and disease pressures move and as climate variability increases, that difference becomes an insurance policy with a measurable value. Breeding programmes also need the variation as a source of material, which is why several origins now maintain seedling stands deliberately rather than as a leftover. The parallel with other crops is exact and instructive. Every major agricultural crop has been through a period of narrowing genetic base followed by a recognition that the discarded material was the source of the traits needed later, and tea is neither ahead of nor behind that curve. What is unusual about tea is that a good deal of the old material is still standing in productive fields rather than only in a germplasm collection, which is a considerable advantage while it lasts.

Where each is chosen today

Clonal planting dominates everywhere yield and uniformity are the objective, which is most of the world’s planted area. Landrace material persists in three situations: where a traditional tea is defined by it and buyers will pay, as with qun ti zhong Longjing and old-bush Wuyi material; where nobody has had the capital to replant, which covers a great deal of Yunnan and parts of Georgia and Vietnam; and where a producer has deliberately kept or re-established it. The first and third are worth a premium and the second is often sold without any claim at all, which is one of the quieter inefficiencies in the tea market. For a reader, the practical upshot is a question worth asking of any tea sold on its cultivar or its lack of one. Is this a field planted deliberately from cuttings of a named selection, a field grown from a local seed population, or a field that has become a mixture of both over fifty years of patching? All three are common, all three taste different, and only the first is usually stated on a label.
