Two ways to make a plant, and they are not equivalent
A tea plant can be grown from seed or from a piece of another plant. Seed comes from flowers that were pollinated by whatever else was flowering nearby, and because tea is largely self-incompatible — a plant will not readily set seed with its own pollen — every seedling is genetically distinct from both its parents and from its siblings. A cutting is not a new individual in that sense at all: it is the same plant, growing on its own roots in a new place, and a whole field of them is one genetic individual repeated. Those two routes produce fields that behave so differently that most of the practical questions in tea cultivation — when to pick, how uniform the intake will be, what happens in a bad year — resolve back to which one was used. The distinction is not a fine agronomic point of interest only to growers, either: it determines whether a cultivar name can honestly appear on a packet, whether a field can be harvested by machine, and whether a bad year removes part of a crop or all of it. Almost every argument in tea about consistency versus complexity is, underneath, an argument about seed against cuttings.
What a seedling gives you

A seed-grown plant puts down a taproot, which goes deep and gives it access to water that surface roots cannot reach. It is also, in a field of its neighbours, one of hundreds of slightly different plants: some flush a fortnight earlier than others, some carry more down on the young leaf, some are more resistant to a given pest, some simply taste different. That variation is a nuisance to a factory manager trying to fill a withering trough with uniform material, and it is precisely what growers of certain teas value, because a mixed intake produces a more layered cup than a uniform one. Seedling fields are also long-lived, and some of the oldest productive tea in the world is seed-grown. The cost is that a seedling field is slow to establish, uneven from its first year, and impossible to describe with a single cultivar name — a grower can say what population the seed came from and cannot say what any individual plant is. For most of the twentieth century that was accepted as simply how tea was, because there was no practical alternative to propagate from.

The technique that changed the industry is simple: a single leaf with a short piece of stem and one bud is cut from a selected mother bush and rooted in a shaded nursery bed. It gives an exact copy of a plant somebody chose, and from the 1930s onwards the research institutes of Assam, Sri Lanka, Japan, Kenya and China used it to distribute selections made for yield, for budding date, for hardiness or for aroma. The economics were decisive. A clonal field flushes together, so a plucking round takes everything at once; it can be laid out to a spacing that suits machinery; and a grower knows in advance what they are going to get. Yabukita in Japan, Longjing 43 in Zhejiang, Qing Xin and Jin Xuan in Taiwan and the TRFK selections in Kenya all reached the field this way. The technique also travels: a promising plant identified anywhere can be multiplied indefinitely and distributed, which turned cultivar development from a local matter of saving seed from a good bush into a national research programme with named releases and extension services. Within two generations of growers, most of the world’s planted area had been rebuilt on it.
What clonal propagation costs
A rooted cutting has no taproot. Its root system is fibrous and comparatively shallow, which makes it more exposed to drought and less able to hold a steep slope, and it is one of the reasons irrigation and careful land preparation matter more in a clonal field than in an old seedling one. The larger cost is genetic. A field of one clone meets a new pest or a new pathogen with one response, and if that response is inadequate the whole field shares it. Producers manage this by planting several clones in blocks rather than one across an estate, which spreads the risk without recovering the variability of a seed population. There is a subtler cost as well. A clone is a plant selected under the conditions of a particular research station in a particular decade, and it carries the assumptions of that moment about what matters — usually yield, sometimes budding date or a specific aroma. As pest pressures move and climates shift, those assumptions age, and a field planted to them cannot be revised without replanting.
Where seed is still used
Seed populations persist wherever the variability is wanted or the replanting never happened. In Chinese usage they are qun ti zhong — group-variety populations — and the term appears on Longjing, Wuyi and Anxi teas as a claim about the material rather than about a place. Japanese zairai is the equivalent, now a small fraction of the planted area. Old China-bush seedlings still stand in Darjeeling and in parts of Fujian, and much of Yunnan’s older material is seed-grown by default. In each case the tea is later, less uniform, lower-yielding and often more expensive, which is only coherent as a market once you know what the variability does to the cup. It is worth noting that the persistence is not always a choice. A grower with no capital to replant has a seedling field by default rather than by conviction, and a great deal of old seed-grown tea is sold with no claim attached at all because nobody involved considered it a selling point. The same material commands a premium in one market and none in another.
How this shows up on a packet
A named cultivar on a label is a statement that the field was planted from cuttings of a selection somebody registered. A qun ti zhong or zairai claim is the opposite statement. Neither is a quality grade: Longjing 43 is planted largely because it buds early enough to reach the pre-Qingming market, and that is an agronomic and commercial decision rather than a flavour one. What the label is really telling you is how the field was assembled, and once you can read that, an enormous amount of otherwise arbitrary tea vocabulary — early-budding premiums, blocks and blends within one estate, the price of seed-grown material — starts to follow from it. One caution goes with this. A cultivar name is a claim about propagation, and claims about propagation are among the hardest in tea to verify from outside: nothing in a finished leaf identifies its clone, the name may be several nursery generations from the registered material, and a field patched over decades may hold three cultivars under one label. Read it as informative rather than as certified.
