Yuan’an
A county in western Hubei responsible for Yuan’an Lu Yuan, one of the small handful of yellow teas still produced. The tea is made from a spring pluck given the smothering step that converts a green tea into a yellow one, and it survives largely because a local co-operative tradition kept the method alive when yellow tea nearly vanished commercially in the twentieth century.
History on this page: TeaHQ synthesis
TeaHQ's own reading of well-attested general knowledge, with no single source behind it.
This district’s description dates something — a founding, a first planting, a period of expansion. The label above says on what basis, and it applies to the historical statements rather than to the elevation, climate or soil claims below, which carry their own confidence separately.
Elevation
Recorded at 300–1000 metres.
How firm this is: Inferred from general knowledge of the district rather than measured or taken from a source that states it.
When it is picked
A spring pluck only, for practical purposes. The yellow tea made here takes a spring pick and then the smothering step that converts a green tea into a yellow one — a slow, warm, humid hold that is repeated and judged by hand and adds days to the process — so the manufacturing calendar extends well past the picking one. Later crops are not worth the labour that step costs.

How production is organised
A co-operative tradition rather than an estate or a brand, and it is the reason the tea exists at all: yellow tea nearly disappeared commercially, the smothering step is slow and unrewarded by volume markets, and the method survived here because a collective structure carried it when no individual grower would have. The category's survival is an institutional fact before it is a sensory one.

How the name is written
Also transliterated as yuan an, yuanan. Romanisations of a district name vary by system and by vendor, and a packet spelling one way is not describing a different place.
Teas this region is known for
- Yuan An Lu Yuan — Toastier than other yellow teas because of the added roast, and a useful demonstration that the category is not a single style.
Other growing regions in China
The neighbouring districts are the useful comparison: they share a country, a grading convention and often a cultivar, so what differs between them is closer to terroir than anything a cross-border comparison can isolate.

Written comparisons
Where TeaHQ has set this region against something it is routinely confused with, and argued the differences out in full.
- Huoshan vs Yuan’an — Two of the handful of places where yellow tea is still made, distinguished by what goes into the smothering step. Huoshan takes a fine bud pluck; Yuan’an takes spring leaf and makes Yuan’an Lu Yuan, and the difference in raw material changes what the men huang step has to do.
