Changxing (Guzhu)

A county on the western shore of Lake Tai in northern Zhejiang, and the site of Guzhu mountain — conventionally identified as the first dedicated imperial tribute tea garden, established in the Tang and producing the purple-budded Zisun or ‘purple bamboo shoot’ tea. Lu Yu lived in this area while compiling the Classic of Tea, and later writing credits him with recommending Guzhu leaf to the court; the attribution is repeated in every account of the garden and is not independently evidenced. Production lapsed for centuries and Zisun was reconstructed in the 1970s from the historical descriptions, so the modern tea is a revival rather than a survival.

History on this page: Widely repeated legend

Repeated very widely and not evidenced. Recorded because the story is itself part of the culture, not because it happened.

This district’s description dates something — a founding, a first planting, a period of expansion. The label above says on what basis, and it applies to the historical statements rather than to the elevation, climate or soil claims below, which carry their own confidence separately.

Elevation

Recorded at 20–500 metres.

How firm this is: Inferred from general knowledge of the district rather than measured or taken from a source that states it.

Climate

Lake-moderated, like the Dongting hills across the water: milder winters and heavy spring mist compared with the surrounding plain, allowing an early pluck.

When it is picked

A hard winter dormancy and a spring the whole year is priced against. Bud break comes as the cold releases; the pre-Qingming picking is the most expensive tea of the year and the pre-Guyu picking behind it is the last that carries a real premium. From Lixia onward the leaf coarsens quickly, and the summer and autumn crops go to bulk green tea, to scenting bases or to nothing at all if labour is worth more elsewhere. The premium decays fast enough that a week of weather is a commercial event. Lake Tai moderates the winter and throws heavy spring mist over the near shore, so this side of the lake picks early relative to the plain behind it.

How production is organised

Smallholder gardens supplying a reconstructed speciality rather than a continuous industry, so quantities are small and the tea is sold on the name of the mountain and the story attached to it. A revived tea is a different commercial object from an inherited one: the method is a reconstruction, the market has to be built each generation, and the price rests on the association rather than on volume.

How the name is written

Also transliterated as chang xing, changxing, gu zhu. Romanisations of a district name vary by system and by vendor, and a packet spelling one way is not describing a different place.

Other growing regions in China

The neighbouring districts are the useful comparison: they share a country, a grading convention and often a cultivar, so what differs between them is closer to terroir than anything a cross-border comparison can isolate.
