Production, trade and price
| Measure | Year | Value | Basis | Published by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auction price (nominal) | 2025 | 2.63 USD/kg | World Bank Pink Sheet series 'Tea, Kolkata', US dollars per kilogram, nominal. Defined by the World Bank as 'leaf, include excise duty, arithmetic average of weekly quotes'. It covers made tea in leaf grades only and is quoted duty-inclusive, so it is not directly comparable with the duty-free quotations at Colombo and Mombasa. Nominal US dollars, not adjusted for inflation. The 2025 annual figure was checked against the twelve monthly values in the World Bank's companion monthly workbook and is a full-year average, not a partial one. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2025 | 2.27 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram. The World Bank publishes this series alongside the nominal one in the same workbook and states that 'Constant prices are prices which are deflated by the Manufacturers Unit Value Index (MUV)', the unit value index in US dollar terms of manufactures exported from fifteen countries. TeaHQ deflates nothing itself: the choice of deflator is part of the claim, and this is the publisher's choice, not TeaHQ's. The figure is the World Bank's 'Tea, Kolkata' series, defined in the workbook as 'Tea (Kolkata auctions), leaf, include excise duty, arithmetic average of weekly quotes'. The quote includes Indian excise duty, so it is not on the same tax basis as the other two auctions. Auction lots are made tea. Constant 2010 US dollars. 2010 is the base year, so the real and nominal figures are identical for 2010 and diverge in both directions away from it. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Auction price (nominal) | 2024 | 2.81 USD/kg | World Bank Pink Sheet series 'Tea, Kolkata', US dollars per kilogram, nominal. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2024 | 2.44 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram. | Consumption | 2024 | 1,070,000 t modelled | FAO's Tea Country Balance Sheet (TCBS) system, as reported in FAO's 2026 beverage price study. TCBS counts MADE TEA — finished, dried, processed tea — which is why FAO's 7.1 million tonne world total here is roughly a fifth of the 31.4 million tonnes the FAOSTAT crop series records for green leaf. Apparent consumption of MADE TEA — a balance-sheet residual of production plus imports minus exports and stock change, not a survey of what people drank. India's consumption, a 15.5 percent share. The report prints this to the stated precision and no further; it is a rounded published figure, not a count. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome |
| Exports | 2024 | 249,986 t | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export quantity' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. Tea crosses a border only as MADE TEA, so this counts finished dried tea and is not on the same basis as the FAOSTAT production series for the same country and year, which counts green leaf. FAO compiles this domain substantially from national customs returns via UN Comtrade, and it includes re-exports. FAOSTAT flags this cell A, an official figure reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |

The Board splits every row into Big Growers — estates with their own factories — and Small Growers, who sell green leaf to a bought-leaf factory. The split is by grower, not by factory: small-grower tonnage is finished tea attributed to the leaf's origin. The Tea Board marks this table '*Provisional, subject to revision from April 24 onwards'. | Production | 2024 | 6,156,031 t imputed | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. FAO's QCL methodology note states the domain 'contains production data for primary products', so this counts GREEN LEAF as plucked, not made tea, and runs roughly four to five times the made-tea figure a national tea board publishes for the same year. Every point in this series is on that one basis, which is what makes the series comparable with itself and not with a tea board's. The Board collects these figures from registered manufacturers, so they count tea that left a factory, not leaf that left a field. The Board collects these figures from registered manufacturers, so they count tea that left a factory, not leaf that left a field. | Share of global exports | 2024 | 14.3 % modelled | Share of world made-tea export volume in 2024, as reported by FAO. India overtook Sri Lanka to become the third largest exporter in this year. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome |
| Auction price (nominal) | 2023 | 2.43 USD/kg | World Bank Pink Sheet series 'Tea, Kolkata', US dollars per kilogram, nominal. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2023 | 2.13 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram.
| Export value | 2023 | 706,900,000 USD | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export value' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves'. FAO publishes this in thousands of US dollars; TeaHQ scales it to whole US dollars, an exact conversion. It is the customs value of made tea shipped, free on board, and includes re-exports. FAOSTAT flags this cell A, an official figure reported by the country. Published as 706,900 thousand USD. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Exports | 2023 | 226,776 t | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export quantity' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. Tea crosses a border only as MADE TEA, so this counts finished dried tea and is not on the same basis as the FAOSTAT production series for the same country and year, which counts green leaf. FAO compiles this domain substantially from national customs returns via UN Comtrade, and it includes re-exports: tea that merely passed through the reporting country is counted as its export. FAOSTAT flags this cell A, an official figure reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Harvested area | 2023 | 607,373 ha imputed | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Area harvested' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in hectares. FAO's methodology note warns that for permanent crops such as tea 'data may refer to total planted area' rather than area actually harvested, so this is the area under tea and not necessarily the area picked in the year. The associated crop is measured as green leaf. FAOSTAT flags this cell I, a value imputed by a receiving agency; the country did not report it. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Production | 2023 | 6,033,531 t estimated | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. FAO's QCL methodology note states the domain 'contains production data for primary products', so this counts GREEN LEAF as plucked, not made tea. It is roughly four to five times the made-tea figure the same country's tea board publishes. FAOSTAT flags this cell E, a value estimated by the publishing agency rather than reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |

| Yield | 2023 | 9,934 kg/ha estimated | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Yield' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in kilograms per hectare, computed by FAO from the production and area figures rather than reported directly. Because production is GREEN LEAF and the area may be planted rather than harvested, this is green-leaf yield per hectare planted and is not comparable with a made-tea yield. FAO states that yields of permanent crops 'are not as reliable as those for temporary crops'. | Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2022 | 2.41 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram.

Constant 2010 US dollars. 2010 is the base year, so the real and nominal figures are identical for 2010 and diverge in both directions away from it. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Exports | 2018 | 262,423 t | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export quantity' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. Tea crosses a border only as MADE TEA, so this counts finished dried tea and is not on the same basis as the FAOSTAT production series for the same country and year, which counts green leaf. FAO compiles this domain substantially from national customs returns via UN Comtrade, and it includes re-exports. | Production | 2018 | 5,820,000 t estimated | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. | Production | 1983 | 581,484 t | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. FAO's QCL methodology note states the domain 'contains production data for primary products', so this counts GREEN LEAF as plucked, not made tea, and runs roughly four to five times the made-tea figure a national tea board publishes for the same year. | Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 1963 | 5.55 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram.
| Production | 1963 | 346,413 t | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. FAO's QCL methodology note states the domain 'contains production data for primary products', so this counts GREEN LEAF as plucked, not made tea, and runs roughly four to five times the made-tea figure a national tea board publishes for the same year. Figures are reproduced as their publisher stated them and are not converted, averaged or ranked. Where two publishers disagree, both rows appear — these come from World Bank, Prospects Group, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division, Tea Board of India, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Kolkata, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Group on Tea, Rome, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Markets and Trade Division, Rome. The largest single trap in tea statistics is that FAO’s series counts green leaf as plucked while national tea boards count finished made tea, and the two differ by roughly a factor of four and a half. The basis column says which each row is, and a figure without it is not comparable to one with it.
How production is organised
Estate-dominated in the districts that made its reputation, and increasingly not elsewhere. Assam and Darjeeling were built as plantations with resident workforces, and that history is documented and contested rather than settled: recruitment of labour from central India in the colonial period, and the wage, housing and citizenship questions that followed from a workforce living on the estate it works, are a live subject in Indian public argument today. Against that, the fastest-growing part of the industry is small growers selling green leaf to bought-leaf factories, in districts — Kishanganj, parts of the Terai — that never had estates at all.
How firm this is: Inferred by TeaHQ from general knowledge of the trade rather than taken from a source that states it. The plantation history and the growth of the small-grower sector are both well attested. TeaHQ records the labour history as contested public argument rather than adjudicating it, and asserts no proportion.
What it produces
Predominantly black tea, both orthodox and CTC. A very large share of production is consumed domestically rather than exported.
How firm this is: Inferred by TeaHQ from general knowledge of the trade rather than taken from a source that states it. Directionally well established; exact proportions vary by year and by source and are not recorded here.

- The early 1930s — Crush, tear, curl
How its tea is graded
India uses the leaf-grade abbreviations (OP, FTGFOP and relatives) that most consumers encounter first. These describe leaf size and appearance — whole leaf, tip content, brokenness — and are not a quality scale, nor comparable with Chinese or Japanese classification.
Grading conventions do not translate between countries. The same abbreviation can describe leaf size in one origin and picking standard in another, and TeaHQ records each system on its own terms rather than mapping them onto a common scale.
How tea is drunk here
Masala chai is a household preparation with enormous regional variation; there is no single authoritative recipe.

Guides covering this origin
- OP, BOP, FTGFOP: what the letters mean, and what they cannot tell you — The letter grades describe the appearance of sorted leaf in one family of producing countries. They are a real, useful and precisely defined vocabulary about size and tip content — and they are not a quality scale, not comparable between origins, and not awarded by anybody.
- How a tea auction works — Auctions still handle a large share of the world’s black tea. The mechanism — consignment, cataloguing, pre-sale sampling, competitive bidding, settlement through a broker — explains both why the system has survived and why so much tea now bypasses it.
- Smallholders, estates and cooperatives — Three ways of organising tea production, with three different distributions of capital, risk and bargaining power. Which one a country runs on explains more about its tea than its climate does.
- The Assam experiment, and what it was actually solving — British India did not discover tea in Assam by accident and did not plant it because the ground was good. It built an industry there to end a strategic dependence on Chinese supply, and the decisions it took in that decade set the shape of the world tea trade.
- How Darjeeling became a protected name — The best-documented attempt to turn a tea name into an enforceable right, and a useful record of what such protection can and cannot do. The machinery is real; the enforcement outside India has been substantially harder than the registration.
- Which countries grow tea — Around fifty countries grow tea commercially and four of them account for most of it. The more useful split is not who grows the most but who exports, who drinks their own, and who does something neither of those numbers shows.
- Does the growing region change the taste? — Yes, and much less directly than the word terroir implies. Most of what a reader attributes to place turns out on inspection to be cultivar and processing — both of which travel with the place, and neither of which is the place.
- Garden, estate, factory or farm: what the words mean — The vocabulary for a tea-producing unit differs sharply between countries, and the same English word means different things in Assam, Anxi and Uji. Knowing which system a packet is speaking in tells you what it is and is not promising.

Written comparisons
Where TeaHQ has set this producing country against something it is routinely confused with, and argued the differences out in full.
- India vs Sri Lanka as producing countries — Two black-tea industries founded within decades of each other under the same colonial trade, and organised on different principles ever since. India sorts its tea by region and leaf grade; Sri Lanka sorts almost everything by elevation.
