TRI 2025

The most widely planted cultivar in Sri Lanka, released by the island’s Tea Research Institute and used across the elevation bands from low-grown to high-grown. Its ubiquity is a useful corrective to the way Ceylon tea is usually explained: the sharp differences between Uva, Dimbula and Ruhuna are largely differences of elevation, climate and manufacture, not of plant material, because much the same clone is growing in all of them.

How much of this is really the cultivar?

Ceylon tea is sold on district — Uva, Dimbula, Nuwara Eliya, Ruhuna — and the districts are conventionally explained as though they were varietal differences. They are not. Much the same clone is growing in all of them, and the differences a drinker registers come from elevation, from the monsoon that hits each district at a different time of year, and from how long the leaf is withered and oxidised. This is the clearest case in the catalogue of a whole origin's marketing vocabulary describing something other than the plant, and the cultivar record is the place to say so.
