Sri Lanka
A black-tea origin organised almost entirely by elevation, where the same island produces light, brisk high-grown teas and dark, full-bodied low-grown ones under a single national name.
History on this page: TeaHQ synthesis
TeaHQ's own reading of well-attested general knowledge, with no single source behind it.
This country’s description dates the establishment or the collapse of an industry. The label says on what basis — it governs the historical statements, not the production figures below, which carry their own definitions and sources.
Production, trade and price
| Measure | Year | Value | Basis | Published by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auction price (nominal) | 2025 | 3.95 USD/kg | World Bank Pink Sheet series 'Tea, Colombo', US dollars per kilogram, nominal. Defined by the World Bank as 'Sri Lankan origin, all tea, arithmetic average of weekly quotes'. Covers made tea across all Colombo grades and elevations, so it averages high-grown and low-grown together. Nominal US dollars, not adjusted for inflation. The 2025 annual figure was checked against the twelve monthly values in the World Bank's companion monthly workbook and is a full-year average, not a partial one. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2025 | 3.4 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram. The World Bank publishes this series alongside the nominal one in the same workbook and states that 'Constant prices are prices which are deflated by the Manufacturers Unit Value Index (MUV)', the unit value index in US dollar terms of manufactures exported from fifteen countries. TeaHQ deflates nothing itself: the choice of deflator is part of the claim, and this is the publisher's choice, not TeaHQ's. The figure is the World Bank's 'Tea, Colombo' series, defined in the workbook as 'Tea (Colombo auctions), Sri Lankan origin, all tea, arithmetic average of weekly quotes'. Auction lots are made tea. Constant 2010 US dollars. 2010 is the base year, so the real and nominal figures are identical for 2010 and diverge in both directions away from it. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Auction price (nominal) | 2024 | 4.13 USD/kg | World Bank Pink Sheet series 'Tea, Colombo', US dollars per kilogram, nominal. Defined by the World Bank as 'Sri Lankan origin, all tea, arithmetic average of weekly quotes'. Covers made tea across all Colombo grades and elevations, so it averages high-grown and low-grown together. Nominal US dollars, not adjusted for inflation. | World Bank, Prospects Group |
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2024 | 3.58 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram.
| Exports | 2024 | 242,423 t | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export quantity' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. Tea crosses a border only as MADE TEA, so this counts finished dried tea and is not on the same basis as the FAOSTAT production series for the same country and year, which counts green leaf. FAO compiles this domain substantially from national customs returns via UN Comtrade, and it includes re-exports. FAOSTAT flags this cell A, an official figure reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Harvested area | 2024 | 268,829 ha | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Area harvested' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in hectares. FAO's methodology note warns that for permanent crops such as tea 'data may refer to total planted area' rather than area actually harvested, so this is the area under tea and not necessarily the area picked in the year. The associated crop is measured as green leaf. FAOSTAT flags this cell A, an official figure reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Production | 2024 | 270,000 t modelled | FAO's Tea Country Balance Sheet (TCBS) system, as reported in FAO's 2026 beverage price study. TCBS counts MADE TEA — finished, dried, processed tea — which is why FAO's 7.1 million tonne world total here is roughly a fifth of the 31.4 million tonnes the FAOSTAT crop series records for green leaf. Sri Lanka's harvest, which the report notes remains below the 0.3 million tonnes typical of the first half of the decade. The report prints this to the stated precision and no further; it is a rounded published figure, not a count. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome |
| Production | 2024 | 1,514,024 t imputed | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. FAO's QCL methodology note states the domain 'contains production data for primary products', so this counts GREEN LEAF as plucked, not made tea, and runs roughly four to five times the made-tea figure a national tea board publishes for the same year. Every point in this series is on that one basis, which is what makes the series comparable with itself and not with a tea board's. FAOSTAT flags this cell I, a value imputed by a receiving agency rather than reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Auction price (nominal) | 2023 | 3.56 USD/kg | World Bank Pink Sheet series 'Tea, Colombo', US dollars per kilogram, nominal.
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2023 | 3.12 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram.
| Export value | 2023 | 1,286,985,000 USD | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export value' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves'. FAO publishes this in thousands of US dollars; TeaHQ scales it to whole US dollars, an exact conversion. It is the customs value of made tea shipped, free on board, and includes re-exports. FAOSTAT flags this cell A, an official figure reported by the country. Published as 1,286,985 thousand USD. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Exports | 2023 | 238,395 t | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export quantity' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. Tea crosses a border only as MADE TEA, so this counts finished dried tea and is not on the same basis as the FAOSTAT production series for the same country and year, which counts green leaf. FAO compiles this domain substantially from national customs returns via UN Comtrade, and it includes re-exports: tea that merely passed through the reporting country is counted as its export. FAOSTAT flags this cell A, an official figure reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Harvested area | 2023 | 268,829 ha | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Area harvested' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in hectares.
| Production | 2023 | 1,495,646 t imputed | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. FAO's QCL methodology note states the domain 'contains production data for primary products', so this counts GREEN LEAF as plucked, not made tea. It is roughly four to five times the made-tea figure the same country's tea board publishes. FAOSTAT flags this cell I, a value imputed by a receiving agency; the country did not report it. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Yield | 2023 | 5,564 kg/ha estimated | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Yield' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in kilograms per hectare, computed by FAO from the production and area figures rather than reported directly. Because production is GREEN LEAF and the area may be planted rather than harvested, this is green-leaf yield per hectare planted and is not comparable with a made-tea yield. FAO states that yields of permanent crops 'are not as reliable as those for temporary crops'. FAOSTAT flags this cell E, a value estimated by the publishing agency rather than reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2022 | 3.3 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram.

| Production | 2022 | 1,400,000 t estimated | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. FAOSTAT flags this cell E, a value estimated by the publishing agency rather than reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Production | 2022 | 255,973 t modelled | FAO Intergovernmental Group on Tea Secretariat figure, MADE TEA — the finished dried product, not the green leaf FAOSTAT's crop domain counts. The IGG compiles it from member-government returns supplemented by FAOSTAT and other sources. Published in million tonnes and scaled here by an exact factor. Down 15.6 percent on 2021, which the IGG calls the greatest Sri Lankan crop shortfall since 1995 and attributes to the 2021 fertilizer ban and the wider economic crisis. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Group on Tea, Rome |

FAOSTAT flags this cell E, a value estimated by the publishing agency rather than reported by the country. | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division |
| Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 2014 | 3.27 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram.
| Exports | 2014 | 325,141 t | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export quantity' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. The associated crop is measured as green leaf.
| Exports | 2001 | 293,524 t | FAOSTAT TCL element 'Export quantity' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. Tea crosses a border only as MADE TEA, so this counts finished dried tea and is not on the same basis as the FAOSTAT production series for the same country and year, which counts green leaf. FAO compiles this domain substantially from national customs returns via UN Comtrade, and it includes re-exports. | Production | 2001 | 1,283,000 t estimated | FAOSTAT QCL element 'Production' for item 667 / CPC 01620 'Tea leaves', in tonnes. | Auction price (constant 2010 USD) | 1986 | 1.61 USD/kg | Constant 2010 US dollars per kilogram. The World Bank publishes this series alongside the nominal one in the same workbook and states that 'Constant prices are prices which are deflated by the Manufacturers Unit Value Index (MUV)', the unit value index in US dollar terms of manufactures exported from fifteen countries.

Figures are reproduced as their publisher stated them and are not converted, averaged or ranked. Where two publishers disagree, both rows appear — these come from World Bank, Prospects Group, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Statistics Division, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Group on Tea, Rome. The largest single trap in tea statistics is that FAO’s series counts green leaf as plucked while national tea boards count finished made tea, and the two differ by roughly a factor of four and a half. The basis column says which each row is, and a figure without it is not comparable to one with it.
How production is organised
Estate-dominated and, unusually, largely publicly owned before being leased: the plantations were nationalised in the 1970s and are now run mostly by regional plantation companies on long leases, alongside a smallholder sector that has grown to supply a large share of the crop — overwhelmingly in the low country. The estate workforce is descended from Indian-origin Tamil labour recruited into the hill country under British rule, and questions of citizenship, wages and housing on the estates remain live rather than historical.
How firm this is: Inferred by TeaHQ from general knowledge of the trade rather than taken from a source that states it. The labour history and the lease structure are consistently and independently reported. Proportions of estate versus smallholder supply move year to year and none is asserted here.
What it produces
Overwhelmingly black tea, orthodox rather than CTC by tradition, sold under elevation bands — high grown, mid grown and low grown — that correspond to genuinely different cup profiles.
What it is known for
The categories this country is most associated with. Being known for a category is a fact about reputation and volume rather than about quality.
- Black tea — Tea taken deliberately through full enzymatic oxidation, giving the dark leaf, amber-to-red liquor and malty or brisk character most Western drinkers think of as simply 'tea'.
Growing regions in Sri Lanka
Named districts with their own elevation, climate and character. Elevation figures are recorded as ranges because sources disagree on where a district begins and ends.
This country in the chronology
Events on TeaHQ’s timeline that happened here or turned on this country. Each carries its date together with what kind of date it is.
- From the mid-nineteenth century, with Mombasa opening in the 1950s — The auction system, and where price is set
- From the 1850s, with legal frameworks running into the twentieth century — How plantation labour was recruited and held
- From the 1870s — A fungus turns Ceylon from coffee to tea
- From the 1870s — Tea manufacture is mechanised
- From the 1880s and 1890s — Tea stops being a commodity and becomes a brand
How its tea is graded
Sri Lanka uses the same leaf-grade abbreviations as India (OP, BOP, FBOP and relatives), describing leaf size and appearance rather than quality. The elevation band printed alongside the grade usually tells a buyer more about the cup than the grade itself does.
Grading conventions do not translate between countries. The same abbreviation can describe leaf size in one origin and picking standard in another, and TeaHQ records each system on its own terms rather than mapping them onto a common scale.
How tea is drunk here
'Ceylon' remains the standard trade name for the tea although the country was renamed in 1972. Both names refer to the same origin, and TeaHQ uses Sri Lanka for the country and Ceylon where the tea trade does.
Teas from Sri Lanka
Guides covering this origin
- Colonial tea history — The tea industries of India, Sri Lanka and East Africa were built under colonial administration, on land and labour arrangements whose consequences are still present. This is part of the history of those teas, not a separate ethical topic.
- OP, BOP, FTGFOP: what the letters mean, and what they cannot tell you — The letter grades describe the appearance of sorted leaf in one family of producing countries. They are a real, useful and precisely defined vocabulary about size and tip content — and they are not a quality scale, not comparable between origins, and not awarded by anybody.
- How a tea auction works — Auctions still handle a large share of the world’s black tea. The mechanism — consignment, cataloguing, pre-sale sampling, competitive bidding, settlement through a broker — explains both why the system has survived and why so much tea now bypasses it.
- Smallholders, estates and cooperatives — Three ways of organising tea production, with three different distributions of capital, risk and bargaining power. Which one a country runs on explains more about its tea than its climate does.
- How tea labour was organised: a structural history — The plantation was not only a way of growing tea; it was a way of assembling and holding a workforce in places that had none. The arrangements built for that purpose outlasted the empires that built them, and much of the industry still runs on their remains.
- Invoice numbers, garden marks and elevation bands: reading an Indian or Sri Lankan lot — The estate industries identify tea by a set of codes that are precise, checkable and almost never explained to consumers. An invoice number, a garden name and an elevation category between them describe a lot more tightly than any adjective on the front of the pack.
- What happened to the plantation labour systems afterwards — The recruitment systems ended; the settlements, the dependencies and the legal categories they created did not. Several of the most difficult questions in the tea industry today are the unfinished business of arrangements made more than a century ago.
- Decolonisation and the transfer of the tea estates — Independence did not change who owned the tea gardens. That took decades more, and it happened by three different routes — forced dilution of foreign shareholding, outright nationalisation, and the deliberate construction of a smallholder sector — with different results.
- Which countries grow tea — Around fifty countries grow tea commercially and four of them account for most of it. The more useful split is not who grows the most but who exports, who drinks their own, and who does something neither of those numbers shows.
- Does elevation make tea better? — High-grown commands a premium in several markets and there is a real mechanism behind it. It is also a claim that stops holding well before the marketing does, and two of the world's most respected tea regions are not high at all.

Written comparisons
Where TeaHQ has set this producing country against something it is routinely confused with, and argued the differences out in full.
- India vs Sri Lanka as producing countries — Two black-tea industries founded within decades of each other under the same colonial trade, and organised on different principles ever since. India sorts its tea by region and leaf grade; Sri Lanka sorts almost everything by elevation.
- Indonesia vs Sri Lanka as tea origins — Two colonial-era estate industries founded within decades of each other on comparable terrain, with completely different outcomes in the consumer market. Sri Lanka built a name; Indonesia, which produces a great deal of tea, has almost no consumer-facing identity at all.
- Sri Lanka vs Kenya as black-tea origins — The two origins that between them supply most of the world’s everyday black tea, by opposite routes. Sri Lanka is orthodox by tradition and sells on district; Kenya is CTC by design and sells anonymously into blends.
