Log packing (Qian Liang)
Steamed dark tea rammed into a woven casing and compressed by rolling and treading the whole column, producing a tea shaped like a pillar rather than a cake.

In tea, processing is not a modifier applied to a category — it is what creates the category. These are the types that exist because this step exists.

What it is
The Anhua log is the most physical operation in tea manufacture. Steamed leaf is loaded in stages into a long cylindrical casing of woven bamboo strip lined with palm leaf and bamboo leaf, and after each charge a team compresses it — ramming with poles, then rolling the whole column back and forth along the ground under their feet and with levers, tightening the casing as the mass consolidates. A full Qian Liang column is conventionally a thousand taels, somewhere in the region of 36 kilograms, and there are smaller members of the same family made the same way. The finished log is then left outdoors under cover for a long seasoning period through sun and dew, during which the tea continues to change. It is sold in slices cut across the column with a saw.

Consolidates steamed leaf into a dense cylindrical column inside a breathable woven casing, then seasons it in the open so the mass dries slowly from the outside inward.
What it does to the cup
The casing materials and the long outdoor seasoning are associated with a distinctive woody, reedy sweetness that loose Anhua dark tea from the same material does not have.

Ways this step is carried out that produce genuinely different results, rather than regional names for the same thing.
- Smaller rolls
- Bai Liang and Shi Liang columns are made identically at lower weights, which is how the format reaches a domestic buyer at all.
- Machine-pressed logs
- Hydraulic ramming into the same casing. It produces the shape and misses the gradual, staged consolidation of the trodden method.
Where this gets misdescribed
Photographs of the treading crew circulate as a piece of folk theatre, which obscures what the operation is for. The staged compression is what makes the density gradient of the column even, and the woven casing is a functional part of the tea rather than packaging — it is left on through the whole seasoning period and contributes to the finished character.
Other steps at the Pressing stage
- Cake wrapping and tong packing — The paper, the bamboo shell and the stack are part of how the tea ages, not packaging around a finished object — and the wrapper is also the document.
- Compression — Steaming loose leaf and pressing it into cakes, bricks, nests or logs — originally for transport, now for ageing.
- Pounding to a paste (mortar-beaten leaf) — Hot steamed leaf beaten in a mortar until it stops being separate leaves and becomes one mass, which is then formed by hand. The output of the step is a paste, not a shape.
- Steam softening before pressing (zheng ya) — Dry leaf is briefly steamed so it can be compressed without shattering — a few seconds too many and the cake has been part-cooked before it starts its life.
- Stone pressing — Forming a cake under a shaped stone weighted by a person standing on it, which gives a looser cake than a hydraulic press does.
