Stone pressing vs log packing
Two ways of consolidating steamed dark tea that produce opposite densities and opposite ageing behaviour. A stone-pressed cake is formed under a person’s weight; a Qian Liang log is rammed into a woven casing and compressed by rolling and treading the whole column.

Why these get confused
Hydraulic pressing is often assumed to be a modern shortcut and stone pressing a mark of quality. Both are working methods with different outputs — a denser cake ages more slowly, which is sometimes exactly what is wanted — and the press is not a proxy for the leaf inside.

The short answer
Density is the variable that decides how a compressed tea ages, and these two are at the extremes of it. A stone-pressed cake is the more forgiving purchase for anyone intending to drink it within a few years; a log is a different proposition in every respect including how it is opened.
