Weeds, ground cover and the floor of a tea field

The ground between the rows is the part of a tea field nobody photographs, and managing it is one of the largest labour costs in the crop, one of the main routes by which chemicals enter it, and one of the few places where a grower can improve the soil rather than only spending it.

Why weeds are an establishment problem above all

A mature tea field with a closed canopy has a weed problem largely under control, because very little light reaches the ground. A young field does not. For the several years between planting and canopy closure, small slow tea plants sit in full light among fast-growing annuals and grasses that will overtop them, and a block lost to weeds in its second year rarely recovers the yield it would otherwise have reached. So weeding is concentrated exactly where the field is producing no revenue, which is a difficult place to spend money and one of the reasons establishment is the stage most often skimped. Where herbicides are not used — organic systems, or places where labour costs less than chemicals — this is the single largest labour demand on an estate outside the plucking season. It is also invisible in the finished product, which is why it is chronically underestimated in accounts of what tea costs to produce.

Closing the canopy is the main control

The most effective weed control in tea is the tea itself, and it is one of the reasons planting density is a real decision rather than a default. Closer spacing closes the canopy sooner and shades out the ground beneath, which suppresses weeds permanently and without input. That is a genuine agronomic argument for density, and it sits against the arguments for wider spacing — soil volume per plant, drought resilience, room to work. Growers are trading one problem for another rather than choosing an optimum. There is a second structural control, which is the shade canopy where one exists. A permanently shaded agroforestry field has less light at ground level than an open one and a correspondingly different weed flora, generally shade-tolerant species rather than aggressive light-demanding grasses. Shade is therefore a weed decision as well as a soil, yield and pest decision, which is a pattern that recurs throughout tea agronomy: every intervention is simultaneously several interventions.

Ground covers, and growing something on purpose

Rather than keeping bare ground, many systems sow a ground cover between the rows — often a legume, which fixes nitrogen and adds it to the soil as its residues break down. The cover occupies the space weeds would take, holds the surface together against rain, moderates soil temperature and adds organic matter. Guatemala grass and other planted strips are used on slopes as living barriers. The trade-off is competition: a vigorous cover competes with the tea for water, which is a problem in a dry season and not in a wet one, so cover management is site-specific and involves periodic cutting rather than simply sowing and leaving. This is the clearest example in tea of a practice that is both an input substitute and a soil investment. A legume cover is doing part of the job of a nitrogen fertiliser and part of the job of a mulch, and it does both slowly, which is why it is well suited to a fifty-year crop and unattractive to a manager assessed annually.

Mulch, prunings and what comes back

The other standard practice is mulching, particularly on young plantings, using grass, prunings or crop residues. A mulch suppresses weeds, holds moisture, moderates surface temperature and decomposes into organic matter. Prunings from the pruning cycle are usually left in the field or spread between rows for the same reasons, and this is one of the few large returns of material to a field that is otherwise exporting nutrients with every harvest. Where prunings are removed for fuel or fodder — common where either is scarce — that return is lost and the drain accelerates. Sourcing mulch is its own constraint. A field needs a great deal of material and it has to come from somewhere, so estates with grassland or forest attached can mulch and estates without cannot, which is one of the quiet ways landholding shape determines agronomic options. Mulching is recommended universally and practised where the material is available.

Herbicides, and the specific difficulty tea has

Chemical weed control is used widely, and tea’s difficulty with it is the same one it has with insecticides: the harvested product is picked every one to two weeks, so the interval between an application and a picking is short, and the list of compounds usable on the crop is correspondingly narrow. Weed control is at least applied to the ground rather than to the plant, which changes the exposure route without eliminating it. What is worth noting agronomically is that the alternatives to herbicide in tea are labour, ground cover and canopy management, and that all three are available. The choice between them is driven by relative cost rather than by agronomic necessity, which is precisely why it differs so much between origins with similar climates.

What else lives down there

The floor of a tea field is where most of its biodiversity is. Ground cover, leaf litter, shade-tree litter and the soil beneath support invertebrate populations that include the natural enemies of tea pests, and a broad-spectrum application aimed at a pest in the canopy reaches them too — which is one of the standard explanations for why mite and thrip populations flare after spraying for something else. Managing the floor is therefore part of pest management rather than a separate activity. It is also where most of the visible difference between production systems sits. An intensively managed open field with bare inter-rows and a closed monoculture canopy and an agroforestry field with shade trees, litter and a planted understorey are different habitats, and the difference is at ground level rather than in the tea.
