The other camellias: tea’s relatives, and the ones sold as tea

Camellia is a large genus and tea is one species in it. Several of the others are useful, one is a major oilseed crop, some are grown in gardens, and a few are harvested and sold in ways that make them hard to tell apart from tea.

Where tea sits in its genus

Camellia is a genus of evergreen shrubs and small trees native to eastern and southern Asia, with a great many species concentrated in southern China, northern South-East Asia and the eastern Himalaya. Camellia sinensis is one of them, and it is the only one whose leaves are the basis of a global drink. The others are used for oil, for ornament, locally as beverages, and not at all. The genus is taxonomically difficult — species boundaries are argued over, names have been revised repeatedly, and several of the plants relevant to tea sit in exactly the contested area. That difficulty is not incidental to the tea trade. The plants that most closely resemble tea are the ones growing in the same forests as tea, harvested by the same people, and sold into markets that pay a premium for anything that can plausibly be described as old, wild or rare. Knowing that the genus is large and that its members are hard to distinguish is the first defence against a whole class of confident marketing.

Camellia taliensis and the Yunnan relatives

Several Camellia species native to Yunnan and adjacent uplands are harvested and processed as tea locally, of which Camellia taliensis is the most often named. Material of this kind reaches the market as ye sheng cha — wild tea — and it does not behave like Camellia sinensis: the leaf is different in appearance, the infusion is different in character, and its composition differs, including its caffeine content. Whether a given tree in a Yunnan forest is C. sinensis var. assamica, C. taliensis, another species or a hybrid is a question a botanist answers with the flower and fruit rather than the leaf, which means it is generally not answerable from a finished tea at all. This is one of the places TeaHQ deliberately stops. The material exists, it is traded, its identification is genuinely uncertain in individual cases, and the catalogue does not carry records for non-sinensis species because a cultivar entity is defined as a cultivar within Camellia sinensis and calling these plants tea cultivars would be the exact category error this whole guide set exists to avoid.

Camellia oleifera, the oil crop

The commercially largest non-tea camellia is Camellia oleifera, grown across southern China as an oilseed crop. Its seeds are much richer in oil than tea seeds and the oil is a significant cooking oil in the regions that produce it. It is sold as tea oil, tea seed oil or camellia oil, and in English-language markets those names are used for oil from this plant and for the minor by-product oil pressed from actual tea seed more or less interchangeably. Anyone buying either should expect the labelling to be unhelpful. This is worth knowing for a second reason, which is that C. oleifera plantations look like tea plantations to a casual eye and are frequently photographed as though they were. Rows of glossy evergreen shrubs on a Chinese hillside may be an oil crop, and the giveaway is that they are allowed to flower and fruit heavily rather than being kept in a plucked hedge.

The ornamental camellias

The camellias of gardens are mostly Camellia japonica, Camellia sasanqua and Camellia reticulata, bred over centuries in China and Japan and later in Europe for flowers rather than for leaves. They are the reason most English speakers recognise the word camellia at all and do not connect it to tea. Sasanqua seed is also pressed for oil in Japan. None of these is grown for a beverage, and the ornamental breeding has gone in the opposite direction from anything a tea breeder wants: larger and more numerous flowers, on a plant whose leaf production nobody is measuring. The relationship is worth stating in one direction only. Knowing that tea is a camellia usefully explains its flowers, its evergreen leathery leaves, its preference for acid soil and its habit. Knowing that a garden camellia is a relative of tea explains nothing about the garden plant’s leaves, and TeaHQ makes no statement about what may be done with them.

Taiwan’s indigenous mountain tea

Taiwan has native Camellia populations in its mountains, distinct from the tea brought to the island by settlers from Fujian. These plants have been used locally, they have been given botanical names of their own, and — most consequentially — they have been used as breeding material. Taiwan’s celebrated black-tea cultivar Hong Yu is generally described as a cross between Burmese large-leaf assamica and indigenous Taiwanese mountain material, and more recent numbered releases have drawn on the same source. This is a rare case of a producing country having a genuinely local genetic resource that is not simply a subset of Chinese material, and it is worth noticing what it produced: a tea with a menthol-and-cinnamon aroma that no cultivar of Chinese descent gives, and that new drinkers routinely assume must be flavouring. That is what access to unusual genetics buys, and it is an argument for maintaining wild and semi-wild populations that has nothing to do with heritage.

Reading a wild-tea claim

Put the pieces together and a claim of wild tea can mean at least four things. It can mean Camellia sinensis growing without cultivation, which is rare. It can mean a long-managed village stand of C. sinensis that has not been pruned in living memory, which is common and is agriculture. It can mean a different Camellia species harvested locally, which is a real product and is not tea in the usual sense. Or it can mean an ordinary pruned field with a word attached to it, which is also common. No test available to a buyer separates these, and the price of the tea does not separate them either. What can be asked is where the material came from, who harvested it, whether the seller has seen the stand, and whether they will say which species they believe it is. A seller who has thought about the question will answer it in those terms. One who has not will repeat the word wild.
