My tea is weak since I moved somewhere high

The same tea, the same dose and the same timer produce a thin, under-developed cup, and the water is boiling — visibly and vigorously — before it goes in.

In short

Water boils at a lower temperature as altitude rises, so ‘boiling’ stops meaning 100 °C. At 2,000 metres it is roughly 93 °C and at 3,000 roughly 90 °C, which is a real difference for black tea, dark tea and roasted oolong, and no amount of longer boiling raises it.

  1. 1. Boiling point is below what the tea needs

    Temperature

    Check: How high are you, and is the tea one that normally wants full boiling water?

    Fix: Extend the steep and increase the dose rather than chasing temperature. A black tea that wants three minutes at sea level may want four or five here, and boiling longer does not make the water hotter.

  2. 2. Leaf that cannot be compensated for by time

    Check: Is it a compressed dark tea, a heavily roasted oolong or a tightly rolled tea?

    Fix: Boil these rather than steeping them. A simmer holds the leaf at the local boiling point continuously, which is the only way to give tightly compressed or heavily roasted leaf enough energy at altitude.

  3. 3. The vessel is losing what heat there is

    Equipment

    Check: Do you preheat the pot, and is the room cold?

    Fix: Preheat the vessel and cover it. When the starting temperature is already low, the several degrees lost to a cold pot matter far more than they do at sea level.

  4. 4. Green tea has quietly become easier, not harder

    Check: Has the green tea improved while the black tea got worse?

    Fix: Nothing to fix. Lower boiling point is an advantage for green, white and yellow tea — it is the teas that wanted full heat that suffer, and the ones that never did are now easier to get right.

When this cannot be fixed

Water cannot be made hotter than its local boiling point in an open vessel, so a tea that genuinely requires 100 °C cannot be brewed as intended at altitude. Boiling the leaf is a workaround rather than an equivalent.
