As CTC black tea it is brisk, coloured and unremarkable, and it is generally blended with clonal leaf rather than kept separate. Where seedling material is made orthodox — which happens in Malawi and Rwanda at a small scale — it can show more depth and less uniformity than the clonal equivalent, in the way seed-grown populations usually do.

How much of this is really the cultivar?

This record is agronomic rather than sensory and should be read that way. CTC processing flattens cultivar differences almost completely, and a supermarket blend then averages across countries, so nothing a typical drinker of African tea tastes is attributable to seedling versus clonal stock. The distinction matters for a different reason: it determines yields, incomes and land use for millions of smallholders, and it is the reason African tea can be produced at a price that makes the world's teabags possible. A cultivar catalogue that only recorded plants whose flavour you can taste would be answering the smaller half of the question.

Cultivar, growing site and processing all shape a cup, and the cultivar is very often the smallest of the three.
