Oxidation vs wet piling
The single most consequential conflation in English-language tea writing. Both are called fermentation in casual usage, and only one of them involves micro-organisms at all. Getting this wrong makes black tea and shou pu-erh look like two points on one scale, which they are not.

The word ‘fermented’ is applied to black tea in a great deal of nineteenth- and twentieth-century trade literature, which is where the confusion is inherited from. That usage predates the understanding that the process is enzymatic, and modern sources that repeat it are repeating a historical convention rather than a chemical description.

The short answer
Calling both fermentation is not merely imprecise — it produces the widespread belief that pu-erh is a very oxidised black tea, and that belief predicts nothing about how either behaves in storage or in a pot. The reliable test is whether micro-organisms are involved, and only one of these two answers yes.
