Bitter in isolation and undetectable in practice. At the amounts tea carries, no drinker distinguishes it from the rest of the alkaloid background.

What it is

Theophylline completes the trio of methylxanthines in Camellia sinensis and is the smallest of the three by a wide margin. The name means 'divine leaf' and is a piece of nineteenth-century chemistry rather than a statement about how much of it tea contains — it was isolated from tea and is present in tea at trace level. It is on this site for one reason: the phrase 'tea's caffeine' is shorthand, and the three-alkaloid picture is what makes several otherwise puzzling comparisons between tea, coffee, cacao and yerba mate come out right.

Where it occurs in the plant

Trace amounts throughout the shoot, following the same young-leaf gradient as the other two alkaloids. It has never been the reason to choose one plucking over another.

In tea, processing is not a modifier applied to a fixed composition — it is what decides the composition. These are the steps that move this compound, and each links to the step itself.

Extraction rate: Fast — among the first things out of the leaf

Soluble and early, on the same schedule as its two relatives. There is no brewing technique that raises or lowers it independently.

Across infusions: Follows caffeine — front-loaded — though at concentrations where the distinction is academic.

Water: Present in trace amounts and extracting as the other methylxanthines do. Nothing about water chemistry makes a practical difference at the concentrations involved in tea.

Leaf, ratio and agitation: Trace-level throughout. It is in this catalogue because it is named constantly in tea writing, not because a drinker meets it.

Where this gets misdescribed

That a compound named after the tea plant must be abundant in it. Theophylline was isolated from tea and named for it, and tea is a poor source of it — the name records a discovery, not a composition.
