The matcha boom, and the shortage it produced
Global demand for matcha grew faster than a crop that takes years to plant, weeks to shade and hours to mill could grow with it. By the mid-2020s Japanese producers were rationing allocations.

That the shortage is a marketing device, or alternatively that matcha is running out.
What the evidence carries. That the constraints are physical and specific — shading, plant maturity, milling rate — and that they act on the high grades first. Production of tencha has been increasing; it has not been increasing as fast as demand, which is a different situation from scarcity and has different consequences for a buyer.
What happened
Matcha moved from a specialist import to a mainstream café and retail product internationally, driven by lattes, by bakery and confectionery use, and by social media. Japanese production could not expand proportionately: tencha requires shading infrastructure, the bushes take years to come into full production, and stone milling has a hard throughput ceiling. Through 2024 and 2025 major Japanese producers introduced purchase limits and allocations, and prices rose sharply.
Why it matters
It is the clearest current example of how tea's agronomy constrains its market. It also changed what is on the shelf: a supply squeeze on high grades pushes demand down the ladder, and much of what is sold internationally as matcha is now lower-grade tencha, non-Uji leaf, or leaf that is not tencha at all.
