Cultivars that emigrated

A cultivar is a plant, and plants move. Several of the best-known named cultivars are now grown thousands of kilometres from where they were bred, which quietly turns a cultivar name from an origin claim into something much narrower.

Why plants travel and what carries them

Clonal propagation is what makes a cultivar portable. A named selection can be multiplied indefinitely from cuttings, so a single plant identified anywhere can in principle be established anywhere the climate allows, and the transfer costs a nursery and a quarantine period rather than a breeding programme. That portability is the reason national research stations exist at all — the whole point of a release is that the plant can be distributed — and it is also why a cultivar name stops meaning a place as soon as the plant is worth planting somewhere else. Tea’s movements have generally followed commercial logic rather than botanical curiosity. Material moves towards cheaper land and labour, towards a climate that suits it, or towards a producer trying to make a style their own country cannot otherwise make. All three have happened repeatedly, and the resulting map has very little to do with where anything is native.

Jin Xuan is a Taiwanese release, and it is now planted extensively in northern Thailand and in Vietnam, where conditions suit it and land and labour cost less. The tea produced is real Jin Xuan in the only sense the name can carry — it is that cultivar — and it is not Taiwanese tea. A great deal of inexpensive milk oolong on the international market comes from these plantings, and the ambiguity is rarely resolved on the label. Alongside it travelled Taiwan’s numbered series more generally, and with it a naming muddle: in Thai usage the name Ruan Zhi denotes one of the Taiwanese numbered cultivars, while in Taiwan the same words are a name for Qing Xin Oolong. So a Thai Ruan Zhi and a Taiwanese Ruan Zhi are different plants. This is what happens when a plant emigrates faster than its vocabulary, and it is a good reason for a catalogue to record aliases carefully rather than assuming a name identifies a plant globally.

The large-leaf diaspora

The most consequential movement in tea history was assamica material spreading out of its native range into every plantation industry built in the colonial period — Ceylon, Java, Sumatra, East Africa, and later Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania and beyond. Every one of those industries was established on introduced planting material, and the numbered clone series they now run on were selected out of those introduced populations rather than from anything local. Japan’s black-tea cultivars are a smaller instance of the same movement: assamica-derived material brought into a small-leaf country to build an export industry that never established itself. Taiwan’s Hong Yu is a more interesting one, because the introduced Burmese material was crossed with indigenous Taiwanese plants rather than simply planted, and the result is a cultivar that could not have existed in either place alone. Introduction plus local genetics is the rarer and more productive pattern.

The reverse movement is more recent and much smaller. Producers in Kenya, Nepal, Rwanda and elsewhere building speciality lines have introduced Chinese and Japanese small-leaf cultivars to make green teas, whites and orthodox blacks that their assamica-based clonal stock cannot produce. Georgia’s industry was built on Chinese material introduced in the imperial Russian period and subsequently selected locally, producing cold-adapted plants such as Kolkhida. Turkey’s industry derives from Georgian stock. And Chinese small-leaf seed reached Darjeeling in the nineteenth century, which is the single reason Darjeeling and Assam are different teas. Each of these introductions was made to solve a specific problem: this place cannot make that kind of tea with the plants it has. That is a better reason to move a plant than cost, and it tends to produce more interesting results.

What changes when a plant moves

A cultivar is one variable and a tea is the product of many. Move Jin Xuan from Nantou to northern Thailand and the plant is identical while the altitude, latitude, day length, rainfall pattern, soil, picking standard, labour and factory are all different, and the tea is recognisably related and not the same. This is the most useful thing a migrated cultivar teaches, and it is close to a natural experiment: the genetics are literally held constant, so everything that differs is attributable to something else. The specific version worth remembering here is that a cultivar name constrains the tea considerably less than most labels imply. It rules some things out — a Jin Xuan will not taste like a Hong Yu — and it leaves an enormous range open, which the site and the maker then fill in.

Reading a cultivar name as a claim

Once plants travel, a cultivar name and an origin claim come apart, and the two need to be checked separately. A tea sold as Jin Xuan is making a claim about the plant; a tea sold as Taiwanese high-mountain oolong is making a claim about the place; a tea sold as Taiwanese Jin Xuan is making both, and only the second is in principle checkable through documentation. Prices that look too low for the origin claimed are the ordinary signal that the plant emigrated and the label did not. There is nothing wrong with a migrated cultivar, and it is worth saying so directly. Thai and Vietnamese Jin Xuan is honest tea, well made in many cases, and priced for what it is. The problem is never that a plant moved. It is that a name which used to imply a place still sounds as though it does.
