The subject, and why it is not the same as describing the machines

TeaHQ has records for withering troughs, rolling, rotorvanes, crush-tear-curl and fluid-bed drying, and they explain what each does to leaf. What none of them explains is that these are not neutral tools chosen to reproduce a hand process. They are the reason black tea is cheap, the reason it comes in the grades it comes in, and the reason the ordinary cup in Britain, Pakistan, Egypt and East Africa tastes as it does rather than as an orthodox Chinese black tea tastes. A machine that was adopted because it saved labour on a colonial plantation is now the thing that defines a flavour category. That causal chain is the subject here.
Why the pressure to mechanise was so much stronger in India than in China

Chinese black tea was made by people who had been making tea for a very long time, in a labour market where the skill was already in place. The Indian industry was built from nothing by people who did not have the skill, on a scale that made buying it in impossible, and it was capitalised by investors expecting the returns of an industrial enterprise rather than of a farm. Machinery was the obvious answer to all three problems at once: it substituted for skill that could not be recruited, it raised output per worker on estates whose labour supply was a permanent political problem, and it turned a craft with variable results into a process an accountant could model. The same logic then travelled to Ceylon and later to East Africa with the estate model itself.

The conventional account in the trade runs roughly like this: rolling was mechanised first, in the second half of the nineteenth century, with machines built for Indian estates; drying followed, with hot-air driers replacing pan and charcoal firing; cutting machines arrived between the wars; and crush-tear-curl, which does rolling and cutting in one pass through toothed rollers, came out of Assam in the 1930s. TeaHQ can name only one of those attributions against a source it has read, and states the rest as the trade's conventional chronology rather than as record. This is a genuine and awkward gap: the machinery history of tea is written down, in engineering journals and company archives, and TeaHQ has retrieved none of it. A reader should regard the shape of this sequence as reliable and any individual date in it as unchecked.
What the machines decided about the cup

More than the leaf did, for most of the world's tea. Machine rolling ruptures cells more uniformly and more completely than hand rolling, so oxidation runs faster and further and the liquor is darker, brisker and less aromatic. Cutting the leaf small raises the surface area exposed to water, which is why the resulting tea gives a strong coloured brew in three minutes in a mug with milk, and why it gives almost nothing on a second infusion. Sorting to a fixed grade specification makes the output blendable, which is what allows a packer to promise the same taste every week from leaf that changed origin. Every one of those is a machine consequence, and together they define an entire idea of what tea is that has nothing to do with the leaf's origin.
The orthodox survival, and why it is a market position rather than a holdout

Orthodox manufacture did not survive because anybody resisted machinery — orthodox tea is made on machines too, and has been for a long time. It survived because a tea sold on where it came from has to keep the leaf recognisable, and cutting it destroys the evidence. Darjeeling, Assam orthodox, Ceylon high-grown and every single-origin black tea sold on a garden name are in that position. So the split between orthodox and CTC is not old versus new. It is a split between tea sold as a specification and tea sold as a place, and the machinery follows the way the tea is sold rather than the other way round.

That is a deliberate omission and not a stylistic one: the names circulate freely in tea writing, are easy to repeat, and are exactly the class of claim this platform will not carry without having read something.
