Hand plucking vs mechanical harvesting
The first decision in tea manufacture and the one that constrains every later one. A hand picker chooses what to take; a machine takes everything at a set height. Nothing downstream can put back the selection a machine did not make.

Why these get confused
Hand plucking is often sold as a mark of quality in itself. It is a precondition for a fine plucking standard and not a substitute for one — leaf hand-picked to a coarse standard is coarse leaf, picked slowly.

The short answer
Machine harvesting is a genuine choice rather than a failure, and it is the correct one for tea that will be cut into granules anyway. It becomes a problem only when it feeds an orthodox line, where the leaf integrity the method preserves was compromised before the leaf reached the factory.
