Compare two teas

Side by side across seven dimensions. There is no verdict and no winner — the purpose is to understand the difference, not to be told which to buy.

Meng Ding Huang Ya

蒙頂黃芽

Yellow tea

Junshan Yinzhen

君山銀針

Yellow tea

Why these two get confused

Two famous yellow teas, both bud-only and both scarce. Junshan Yinzhen’s growing area is a few hectares, so almost everything sold under that name is not from the island.

Cultural contextAs with the rest of the category, much of what carries this name is unyellowed green tea. Sichuan also produces a well-regarded green bud tea from the same mountain, and the two are easily conflated on a label.Production from the original island is tiny, and a large share of tea sold under this name is Silver Needle white tea or a bud green tea that has never been yellowed. A description that does not mention smothering, wrapping or men huang is a strong signal that the step was skipped.
Who may prefer itSomeone who prefers a quiet cup they can drink through an afternoon and has drunk enough tea to notice what changes between infusions. It rewards attention to leaf weight and timing.Someone who prefers a quiet cup they can drink through an afternoon and has drunk enough tea to notice what changes between infusions. Nothing above is a recommendation. The last row describes the drinker each tea suits, using each tea’s own authored fields and the same sentence structure for both, so neither can be framed as the safe choice.
