Sahambavy

The only tea district in Madagascar, on the eastern escarpment a short distance from Fianarantsoa, where the highland plateau breaks down toward the rainforest belt and the coast. The estate sits beside a lake on the old forest railway line that runs to the sea, and the siting is the point: this is the narrow band where highland altitude meets escarpment rainfall, cool enough to slow the bush and wet enough to keep it growing. Nowhere else on the island combines the two at a scale anyone has tried to farm.

Elevation

Recorded at 1000–1400 metres.

How firm this is: Inferred from general knowledge of the district rather than measured or taken from a source that states it. Fianarantsoa and its surrounding highlands sit high on the Malagasy plateau; the estate is on the escarpment below the town rather than on the plateau proper. The band brackets that drop rather than pinning the gardens to a figure.

Climate

A highland tropical climate with a marked wet season in the southern summer and a cool, drier winter — cool enough at this altitude for growth to slow considerably without the bush going fully dormant. The escarpment position means orographic rain off the Indian Ocean reaches the estate that the drier central plateau behind it does not get.

When it is picked

Plucking through most of the year with a clear slowdown in the cool highland winter, and the heaviest growth during the summer rains. There is no flush terminology in local use and no quality premium attached to a season.

How production is organised

One estate, one factory, one workforce. There is no out-grower scheme of consequence and nothing to compare the estate's tea against within the country, which means Madagascar's tea has no internal quality hierarchy — the district and the national industry are the same object.
