Mambilla Plateau
The only place in Nigeria where tea grows, and a genuine island of highland climate in a country that otherwise has none. The plateau rises abruptly out of Taraba State in the south-east, continuous with the Cameroonian grassfields across the border, and its combination of altitude, cool nights and reliable rainfall has no equivalent anywhere else within Nigeria's borders. That singularity defines the industry completely: there is nowhere to expand to, the road up is the binding constraint on everything, and processing has to happen on the plateau because leaf cannot survive the journey down.

Rainfall-driven rather than temperature-driven: strong growth through the wet season and a marked slowdown in the harmattan months. The pattern behaves like a flush structure without being one, since nothing here goes dormant with cold.

How production is organised
A large state-associated plantation with its own factory, with smallholder plots around it selling green leaf in. Isolation concentrates the industry: because leaf has to be processed close to where it is picked and there is one factory, the whole district's tea passes through a single operation, and its condition is the industry's condition.
