Gurué
The tea district of Zambézia province, on the wet southern flank of Mount Namuli, where Portuguese planters laid out very large estates from the 1920s and built a company town to run them. By the middle of the twentieth century this was among the biggest tea areas in Africa. Independence and the civil war ended that: factories were wrecked, gardens abandoned, and bushes grew out into thickets that later replanting has had to cut back to. Gurué is the clearest African example of a tea landscape that outlived its industry, and of how long the ground remembers a plantation.

A wet-season calendar rather than a flush one. Growth follows the rains on the wet flank of the massif, so plucking runs through the warm wet months and slows sharply in the cool dry season — a rhythm set by rainfall rather than by temperature, which is the usual pattern in tropical Africa away from the equator.

How production is organised
Very large estates on the ground laid out for them, now worked at a fraction of the scale they were built at, with replanting cutting back bushes that grew out into thickets during the years the industry was not operating. It is an estate landscape without an estate industry, and the gap between the two is the district's defining fact.
