How production is organised

The most consequential production structure in the tea world, and the reason a Kenyan tea almost never reaches a drinker under the name of the place it grew. The majority of the national crop comes from several hundred thousand smallholders, each with a fraction of a hectare, delivering green leaf to factories run by a smallholder agency on their behalf; a separate estate sector, concentrated around Kericho, runs its own large plantations and factories. Both sell overwhelmingly through the Mombasa auction into blends. A farm identity therefore exists in the records and disappears at the factory door.

Kenyan CTC uses its own granule-size grades — BP1, PF1, PD, Dust — which describe particle size and speed of extraction. They have no relationship to orthodox leaf grades despite sharing some letters.

Kenyan tea reaches most drinkers unnamed, as the backbone of blends sold under a packer’s brand rather than an origin. That anonymity is a commercial convention, not a statement about quality.
