Compression is a logistics decision

Loose tea leaf is mostly air. Compressed tea is dense, stackable, resistant to crushing, easy to count, hard to adulterate once sealed and stamped, and far less exposed to air at its interior than the same weight loose. Every one of those properties matters to somebody moving tea a long way over bad ground, taxing it at a barrier, or storing it for years. None of them matters much to a person brewing a cup at home, which is why compression looks decorative to a modern buyer and looked obvious to everybody who handled tea before railways. The default assumption should therefore run the other way from the usual one: loose leaf is the format that requires an explanation, and it becomes normal only where the distance is short, the packaging is good, or the buyer is paying for a delicacy that compression would damage. A second consequence follows for anybody storing tea now. Compression slows the exchange between leaf and air, so a dense cake ages differently from the same leaf kept loose, and more slowly at its centre than at its face. That is why compressed teas can be kept for decades in conditions that would flatten a loose green within a year, and why breaking a cake up changes its future as well as its present.
The Tang cake and the grinding it implied

Tang-period tea reached the drinker as a compressed cake that had to be roasted at the fire, ground and sieved before it could be used. That is a manufacturing chain with two distinct stages — a producer who steams, pounds and moulds, and a consumer who reduces the result back to powder — and it means the cake was a storage and transport format rather than a finished product. It also means the drinker owned equipment: a brazier, a grinder, a sieve. The whole apparatus described in the Cha Jing follows from the format. Where a tea culture inherited the cake, it inherited the equipment; where a later reform abolished the cake, the equipment went with it, and this is the single clearest example in tea of a package format determining a room full of tools. It is also why the vocabulary of Tang tea is full of tools rather than of gardens. A modern reader who arrives at the Cha Jing expecting descriptions of origin and character finds instead an inventory: the roasting tongs, the paper bag to hold the warm cake, the mill, the sieve and its box, the measure. That is what a manual for a compressed product looks like.

Song tribute manufacture took compression in the opposite direction from logistics. The court cakes were made from very fine material, moulded with dragon and phoenix designs, and produced in small numbers at enormous cost in labour, with the mould itself a mark of rank. At that point the compressed form is not solving a transport problem; it is solving a status problem, and it is closer to a minted object than to a package. Two things follow. The first is that any argument that compression is inherently a peasant or frontier format is wrong on its own evidence. The second is that this is precisely the manufacture the Ming reform is said to have objected to — not compression as such, but the labour buried in a decorative tribute cake. When later marketing invokes imperial cake tea, it is usually invoking this branch while selling something from the other one.
The frontier brick, made to a specification

The compressed teas that went to the plateau and the steppe are a different product again: coarse leaf and stalk, pressed hard into standard rectangular units, made to survive months of handling by porter, yak and camel, and made to a specification a purchasing authority laid down. The rectangle is not aesthetic. It stacks without voids, it can be counted in a load without unpacking, it breaks into pieces of predictable size for a cauldron, and a stamped face carries the maker’s mark, the grade and often the count. Where such a brick functioned as money — and in parts of Tibet, Mongolia and Siberia it did — the standardisation is the whole point, because money must be countable and verifiable by people who cannot assay it. `guide-s32h-brick-tea-as-currency` follows that thread. Two further details in these bricks repay attention. The stalk content, which a speciality buyer reads as a defect, is deliberate: stalk binds the block and holds it together under handling. And the density is calibrated to break rather than crumble, because a brick that shatters into dust cannot be measured into a cauldron by eye. Both are engineering decisions rather than compromises.
The modern pu-erh formats and what they inherited

The formats a pu-erh buyer meets now — the round cake, the bowl-shaped nest, the rectangular brick, the small squares and coins — descend from that logistics tradition and have acquired functions it never had. Size is a unit of trade and a unit of ageing: a large dense cake matures differently from loose material of the same leaf, because the interior is less exposed. Wrapper, stamp and neifei are provenance marks in a market where provenance carries most of the price. And the numbering conventions on wrappers are a grading and batching vocabulary rather than a recipe. Compression in this market therefore does three jobs at once: it preserves and slows, it identifies, and it makes the tea storable and tradeable in defined lots. That combination is what allows a tea to behave like an asset, which is the subject of `guide-puerh-asset-market`. One caution belongs with all of that. Because the format now carries so much of the value, it also carries most of the fraud: wrappers are reprinted, stamps are copied, and cakes are pressed from leaf that has nothing to do with the identity on the paper. A form that originally assured physical integrity has become, in this market, the main surface on which provenance is asserted and therefore the main surface on which it is faked.
How to read a compressed tea you are offered

Ask what the shape was for. A dense small brick of coarse leaf with a stamped face is a frontier-format product and should be priced and brewed as one. A loosely pressed cake of whole spring leaf in a printed wrapper is a speciality product using an old format for storage and identity. A tightly compressed nest that will not yield to a pick without shattering the leaf was made for shipping rather than for you. And a decorative moulded shape — a flower, a character, a novelty — is generally a presentation product, whatever the leaf inside is. None of these judgements requires knowing the vendor’s story, and all of them are more reliable than it. The form is physical evidence about the intended journey, and unlike a tasting note it cannot be revised in the listing. The one thing the shape cannot tell you is age, and it is the thing most often inferred from it. Darkening, a loosened wrapper and a dusty surface are consequences of storage conditions rather than of elapsed years, and all three can be produced quickly. Every other reading in this section rests on physical properties that are expensive to fake; that one rests on appearance, which is cheap.
