The volume is not where the attention is
Most tea consumed globally is CTC black tea, blended, bagged and drunk with milk, and its origin is unnamed on the packet. Most tea writing — including this catalogue — concerns whole-leaf single-origin tea, which is a small fraction of volume. Both facts are worth holding at once: the speciality world is not a representative sample of tea, and it is where most of the documented knowledge is.
What the speciality revival actually changed
Since roughly the 1990s a Western speciality market has grown around origin transparency, harvest dating, cultivar naming and gongfu brewing. Its genuine contributions are better information and direct trade relationships. Its genuine failure modes are romanticised cultural framing, authenticity claims a buyer cannot verify, and pricing narratives — old-tree, plot-numbered, competition-graded — that rest on assertions rather than evidence.
Bubble tea and the new mass forms
The most commercially significant new tea category of the last forty years is bubble tea, and it is where a very large share of younger drinkers encounter tea at all. Matcha lattes and ready-to-drink tea are comparable cases. Speciality tea writing has tended to place these outside the subject, which misdescribes where the audience is and where the category is growing.
Where the honest gaps are
Three worth naming. Health marketing runs well ahead of evidence across the whole category, and is the area where the gap between claim and support is widest. Sustainability and labour conditions in producing regions are documented concerns that consumer-facing writing tends to omit. And authenticity claims — origin, age, elevation, cultivar — are frequently unverifiable by the buyer, which is a structural feature of the trade rather than an occasional lapse.
