Land use: what a tea field replaced

Tea grows where forest used to be, almost everywhere it grows. Most of that conversion is a century or more old, which changes what the honest environmental question is — from what tea is destroying to what a long-established monoculture is now maintaining.

The land tea wants is the land forest wanted

Camellia sinensis is an understorey shrub of humid, warm, acidic-soiled hill country with reliable rainfall and good drainage. Those conditions describe montane and submontane forest — the tropical and subtropical wet forest belts of southern China, north-east India, Sri Lanka, the Eastern Arc and the Indonesian highlands. Tea did not colonise marginal land nobody wanted; it took some of the most biologically rich land in the countries that grow it, because that is where the plant performs. This is the first and most important fact about tea and land, and it is true regardless of how a particular field is managed today. It also explains why tea regions and biodiversity hotspots overlap so persistently on a map. The Western Ghats, the Sri Lankan central highlands, the Eastern Arc mountains, the mountains of Yunnan and the Indonesian volcanic uplands are all among the most species-rich places on the planet, and all of them grow tea. That is not a coincidence, and it means the environmental questions about tea are unusually consequential for their area — a hectare in these landscapes is not an average hectare.

The large clearances for tea in India, Sri Lanka, Java and East Africa belong overwhelmingly to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A field planted in the 1880s has been tea for well over a century, its soil, hydrology and species assemblage long since settled into a new state. That timing matters for how the question should be framed. For most established tea regions, the live issue is not deforestation — it is what an old monoculture does year after year to soil, water and biodiversity, and whether the land could hold more if managed differently. Recent expansion is a real issue in some places, particularly where planting has pushed uphill or into remaining forest margins, but it is not the general case. Framing matters here because it changes what an intervention should be. Where clearance is historical, no amount of consumer pressure undoes it, and the useful questions are about management, restoration of fragments and what happens at the margins. Where expansion is current, the useful question is about land-use planning and the boundary of protected areas, which is a matter for governments rather than for buyers. Treating a century-old landscape as though it were a live deforestation front misdirects effort that could be spent on either.

What a tea monoculture is, ecologically

A conventional tea field is a dense, even-aged, single-species canopy about a metre high, kept flat by plucking and pruning, with bare or lightly vegetated ground beneath and little vertical structure. Compared with the forest it replaced, it has lost the canopy layers, the deadwood, the epiphytes and nearly all the species that depend on them. Compared with an annual crop, though, it retains several things: permanent root systems, year-round soil cover, no annual ploughing, and a woody perennial with continuous litter fall. Tea is a poor habitat and a relatively stable land use. Both halves of that sentence matter, and accounts that give only one are misleading. The uniformity is also, in part, an artefact of a management decision that could be made differently. A tea field does not have to be bare underneath, does not have to be unshaded, and does not have to run to the edge of a stream. Fields that are none of these things exist and still produce commercially. The monoculture as usually described is the intensively managed version of a system that has a considerable range, and the range is where the interesting environmental variation sits.

The land that is not tea

A tea landholding is not wall-to-wall bushes. Estates typically contain steep ground too difficult to plant, ravines and streams left uncultivated, shade tree lines, fuelwood plantations grown to fire the driers, roads, factory sites and worker settlements. In smallholder landscapes tea sits in a mosaic with food crops, homesteads, woodlots and fallow. This non-tea fraction does a large share of whatever ecological work the landscape performs — it holds most of the remaining structure, most of the water regulation and most of the wildlife movement. It is also the first thing sacrificed when a producer needs to raise planted area, and the cheapest thing to protect when they do not. This has a practical consequence for anyone assessing a tea landscape. The planted proportion of a holding — how much of the total area is actually under bushes — is one of the more informative single numbers about it, and it is rarely published. A holding that is almost entirely planted has removed its buffers, its corridors and its slope protection. One that keeps a substantial uncultivated fraction has retained the parts that do the ecological work, whether or not that was the intention.

Permanence, and why land in tea tends to stay in tea

Converting land to tea is expensive and slow: clearing, terracing, planting and several years before commercial yield. That cost is sunk, and it makes reversal economically unattractive even when returns are poor — a grower with an unprofitable field usually neglects it rather than replacing it, because the alternative crop has its own establishment cost and the tea is already there. The consequence is a very sticky land use, one that persists through decades of bad prices. Whether that is good or bad depends on what would otherwise happen. Compared with conversion to annual cropping or settlement, persistent tea holds soil and cover; compared with restoration, it holds the land out of recovery indefinitely. The exception is abandonment, which is what actually happens when tea becomes unviable and nobody replaces it. An abandoned tea field does not become forest quickly: the bushes persist for years, competing with anything trying to establish, and the recovering vegetation is typically a scrub of whatever colonises fastest. Where restoration is the goal, it generally has to be done deliberately rather than by leaving the land alone, which is another cost nobody has budgeted for.

Yield, area and the intensification argument

There is a real argument that higher-yielding tea uses less land per kilogram and therefore spares land elsewhere, and a real counter-argument that intensification raises input use per hectare and hardens the monoculture. Both are correct as far as they go, and the resolution is empirical and local: it depends on whether the spared land is actually spared, on what inputs the higher yield requires, and on whether demand is fixed. TeaHQ does not resolve this and notes that land-sparing versus land-sharing is an unsettled question across agriculture generally, not a tea-specific dispute with a tea-specific answer. What can be said is that the argument is often deployed selectively. Intensification is invoked to justify high input use, and land-sparing benefits are claimed without any mechanism by which the spared land would be protected. Conversely, low-input systems are credited with biodiversity benefits without accounting for the additional area their lower yields require. Both moves take the half of the trade-off that suits the case being made. An honest assessment has to hold both halves at once, and usually finds that the answer depends on governance rather than on agronomy.

What this page does not claim

No areas under tea, deforestation figures, or rates of expansion are given for any country or period, and TeaHQ has not retrieved such figures from FAO, national statistical agencies or forest-cover datasets. The dating of major clearances to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is the standard historical account and is stated at that level of resolution deliberately. No claim is made that tea is a better or worse land use than any alternative — the page sets out what the comparison depends on and stops there. Nothing here describes any specific estate, region or company. The list of biodiversity-rich regions that grow tea is offered as a general geographical observation and not as a set of conservation designations, which are made by particular bodies under particular criteria that TeaHQ has not consulted. And the page does not address carbon in the landscape, which belongs with the replanting and field-renewal material where the pools and the disturbance can be discussed together rather than asserted here in passing.
