Thermometer vs temperature-controlled kettle
Measuring the water against controlling it. A thermometer is cheap, tells the truth and does nothing about it; a controlled kettle acts and can be wrong. The most useful thing a thermometer does is calibrate the rest of the kitchen, including the kettle.

The short answer
Own the kettle if the daily practice needs it and own the thermometer regardless, because a controlled kettle that has drifted is worse than no controller at all — it produces confident wrong numbers. Ten minutes with a probe also removes the need for a controller entirely for anyone happy to let boiled water stand.
