TDS meter vs water filter jug
Measuring water against changing it, and the measurement is less informative than it looks. A TDS pen reports conductivity converted to an estimated dissolved-solids figure; it does not report which solids, and for tea the composition matters more than the total.

Why these get confused
TDS figures are borrowed into tea from speciality coffee, where they are used alongside a fuller picture of water composition. A TDS reading on its own does not distinguish water that will flatten a green tea from water that will suit a black one.

The short answer
For almost every drinker the jug is the purchase and the meter is a curiosity. A meter earns its place only when several water sources are being compared systematically, and even then the number it gives is a proxy for a composition it cannot see.
