Oxygen absorber vs humidity control pack

Two small sachets that look almost identical, do opposite jobs, and are used on categories of tea whose storage requirements are direct opposites. Putting the wrong one in is one of the few storage mistakes that actively harms the tea.

Why these get confused

They are the same size, similarly printed, sold in the same section, and both read as generic freshness sachets. One removes something and the other adds something.

Point by point

AspectOxygen absorberHumidity control pack
What is in itIron powder and a salt catalyst in a permeable sachet.A saturated salt solution in a permeable polymer sachet.
What it doesReacts with oxygen inside a sealed package and takes it out of the headspace.Releases moisture below a target humidity and takes it up above one.
What it is aiming atOxidation in storage, which turns a fresh green tea flat and brown.Holding a chosen humidity, because ageing dark tea depends on moisture being present.
Which teas want itGreen tea and matcha above all — it is used commercially in packing both, usually alongside a nitrogen flush.Dark tea kept for ageing, and essentially nothing else.
What happens if you use the wrong oneOn an ageing pu-erh, removing oxygen works against the microbial activity the ageing depends on.On green tea or matcha, adding moisture accelerates exactly the staling you were storing against.
Does the container matterIt only works in a genuinely sealed package. In a loose tin it exhausts itself on room air.It works in a closed but not airtight vessel — a clay jar or a sealed box, not a vacuum.
How long it lastsUntil the iron is spent, which in a poorly sealed container is quickly.Until the solution equilibrates; they are rechargeable or replaceable.

The short answer

Ask what the tea is supposed to be doing in the container. Green tea is meant to stay exactly as it is, so take the oxygen out and keep the moisture away. Dark tea is meant to keep changing, so give it steady humidity and leave the air alone. The two sachets encode that difference and are not interchangeable.
