What is being compared
Point by point
| Aspect | Barberry | Goji berry |
|---|---|---|
| Flavour | Sharply sour with a bitter edge, closer to cranberry than to cherry. | Mildly sweet and faintly savoury, with very little acidity. |
| Where it comes from | South Khorasan in Iran, which produces the overwhelming majority of the world’s zereshk. | Ningxia in China, which is the reference growing region. |
| How it is used | Scattered over zereshk polo, made into syrup, and brewed as a sharp red infusion. | Dropped into a flask of hot water and topped up through the day, and cooked in soups. |
| Drying | Shade-dried, because sun drying blackens it and destroys the colour that is half the value. | Sun-dried, and it keeps a deep orange-red. |
| In Europe | The shrub was cleared systematically because it hosts a wheat rust fungus. | Sold as a superfood on physiological claims TeaHQ does not make and does not repeat. |
The short answer
Goji is the easier drink and barberry the more useful cooking ingredient. Bright colour is the buying signal for both, and for opposite processing reasons.
