Ban Tian Yao vs Qi Lan
Two aromatic Wuyi cultivars that sit outside the famous four and are often shelved together as ‘the other rock teas’. One is an indigenous Wuyi selection with a fruity, dried-longan character; the other is grown in two different parts of Fujian and processed so differently in each that it barely reads as the same plant.

Why these get confused
Qi Lan is sold as a Wuyi rock tea and as an Anxi-area oolong under the same cultivar name, and the two taste so unalike that drinkers reasonably conclude one of them is mislabelled. Both are genuine; the processing tradition is what changed.

Both are worth buying and neither is a cheap substitute for the famous four. Ban Tian Yao is the one to reach for if roasted fruit is the point; Qi Lan is the one to reach for if the orchid aroma is, and in that case a lighter southern-Fujian rendition is the more direct route to it.
